The European Union (EU) is pushing to legalize peoples' individual
right to delete all information about themselves online, the UK's The
Daily Telegraph said on Saturday.

"Internet users must have effective control of what they put online
and be able to correct, withdraw or delete it at will. What happens if
you want to permanently delete your profile on a social networking
site? Can this be done easily? The right to be forgotten is essential
in today's digital world," EU rights commissioner Viviane Reding told
the newspaper.

Although various online services and social networking sites allow you
to delete your profile, there is as yet no simple way to remove
personal information that has spread through the Internet.

This move by the EU sets a precedent for online companies, many of
which —including Facebook and Google— are already embattled in privacy
and anti-trust issues.

It remains to be seen if other countries will follow suit.

The move by the EU sets an interesting precedent for countries like
the Philippines, where social media are utilized heavily by the public
as well as the private sector.
