MINISTERS  GO SCOT FREE IN  KUMBAKONAM  (TAMIL  NADU ) FIRE MISHAP JUDGEMENT

After more than fifteen years, when 94 innocent children were burnt down in a fire accident in Kumbakonam  school in Tamil Nadu, judgement has come punishing the members of school  management, workers in the school and a few lower level officials.  Now, the question is as to why the top bureaucrats in charge of the education department and the education minister  have been left scot free,  as if they have no responsibility  for the ghastly fire accident..

In all cases of accidents and mishaps in the country, whether it is railway or mines or other disaster, where many innocent lives have been  lost, the ministers and top bureaucrats are never made accountable. Only the officials at the lower level are punished.

The judgement in the Kumbakonam fire mishap says that the management of the school have been careless and violated rules and local officials have not enforced the rules. Obviously, the officials must have been bribed.

The lack of vigilance and non enforcement of rules by the local officials is a direct reflection on the quality of the administration provided by the top bureaucrats and ministers.  If they were to be efficient and committed , the chain of command upto the lower level of the government machinery would be vigilant.  It is surprising that the judges have not thought it necessary to punish the then education minister and the then officials for this very unfortunate and ghastly fire accident  burning away innocent lives.  They have not even been severely reprimanded.
